Open House 11:00 – 3:00pm Friday, November 20th and Saturday, November 21st

An innovative solution to the post-hurricane housing crisis is soon to be unveiled in Port Arthur. Join us this Friday, November 20 in celebrating the completion of the first two Texas Grow Homes.

The Texas Grow Homes Project is an effort to revolutionize post-disaster housing by creating housing that is affordable, well designed, energy-efficient and rapidly built in the wake of a disaster.  The three winning architectural solutions from the Texas Grow Home Design Competition are being constructed as model homes for our demonstration project in Port Arthur, TX. We selected Port Arthur as the location to build the model homes because of the large number of low-income homeowners who had been affected by Hurricane Rita. Through a partnership with Southeast Texas Interfaith Organization, a disaster recovery organization in Port Arthur, three Rita survivors have been selected to become owners of the first Texas Grow Homes.

Covenant Community Capital Corporation, a nonprofit organization based in Houston, will complete two of the Texas Grow Home protoypes this Friday, and the third will be completed in coming months. These three prototype homes will provide the basis for a large-scale, $6 million demonstration program, which will be constructed in 2010 in partnership with the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs.

The purpose of the three Port Arthur prototypes is to test the designs against the realities of real world construction costs, refine the design before entering into large-scale production, and most importantly engage the public in a plan to address Texas’ affordable housing needs on a broad scale with a home that defies the stereotypes of traditional low-income housing.

We extend an open invitation to the Texas Grow Home Exhibit and two house blessing ceremonies and hope that you will share in the celebration.
